Santo Stefano Island
An island of wind-sculpted granite, dotted with Mediterranean scrub and overlooking an intensely emerald sea.
Discover Santo Stefano Island
The island of Santo Stefano is an imposing granite mass rising from the sea, with irregular coastlines, hidden coves and cliffs that in some stretches drop sheer into the water. The rock, carved by the wind, alternates smooth, polished surfaces with deep fissures, creating a dynamic landscape that is never monotonous.
On the higher parts, Mediterranean scrub weaves its way between the granite boulders, with myrtle, mastic and strawberry trees dotting the rock with patches of green. Here and there you can also glimpse traces of the island’s military past: forts, buildings and structures that tell an important chapter of its recent history.
The island of Santo Stefano is a place with a strong soul, where nature and human traces coexist in balance, giving life to an essential, highly recognisable landscape. Skirting the island by RIB reveals its double identity: gliding over the water, you can closely observe the contrasts between beaches, crystal-clear coves, resorts and military constructions hidden in the rock, and the explosion of wild nature surrounding them – a fascinating visual tour, very different from the usual seaside routes.
What to expect in this paradise
Wind-sculpted granite, Mediterranean scrub threading its way between the rocks and glimpses of emerald-green sea all around: the island of Santo Stefano has a strong character, where nature and history meet.

Fun Facts and Frequently Asked Questions
Where is Santo Stefano Island located?
Santo Stefano Island is located in north-eastern Sardinia, within the La Maddalena Archipelago, between the main island of La Maddalena and the island of Caprera. Its position is particularly strategic, as it lies in one of the most well-known stretches of sea in Gallura.
Unlike many other islands in the archipelago, Santo Stefano is partially inhabited and has long been associated with military installations, which have influenced both its development and its accessibility.
From a landscape perspective, the island features rocky coastlines, small coves and panoramic views towards Caprera, La Maddalena and the channel that separates the two islands.
How can you reach Santo Stefano Island?
Santo Stefano is easily reachable by sea, as it lies just a short distance from both La Maddalena and the Gallura coastline. Its proximity to Porto Rotondo, Palau and La Maddalena makes it a natural stop during navigation within the archipelago.
There are no mass tourist transport connections as there are for La Maddalena, which helps keep the island less crowded and more preserved.
The most interesting way to reach Santo Stefano is by sea, including it within a broader itinerary.
With Flag Sardinia, Santo Stefano can be part of a RIB boat day: bareboat rental for those with a boating license, or skippered charter for a guided and fully personalized experience.
What is Santo Stefano Island famous for?
Santo Stefano Island is best known for its historical connection to military presence. For many years, it hosted an Italian Navy base and later a NATO base, now decommissioned, which remains one of the most distinctive elements of the island.
This historical background clearly differentiates it from other islands in the archipelago, making it an interesting destination not only from a natural point of view but also from a historical perspective.
In addition to its history, Santo Stefano offers scenic coastal views, clear waters and less crowded coves, along with unique viewpoints over Caprera and La Maddalena.
The combination of history and nature makes the island a distinctive and unique destination within the archipelago.
What can you do on Santo Stefano Island?
Santo Stefano offers a different kind of experience compared to the more tourist-oriented islands of the archipelago.
From a natural perspective, visitors can admire rugged coastlines, stop near quieter coves and enjoy generally clear and calm waters.
From a historical perspective, the island provides a unique setting influenced by its former military structures, which contribute to a landscape unlike any other in the area.
While navigating around the island, it is also possible to enjoy striking views of Caprera and the channel separating it from La Maddalena, one of the most iconic areas of the archipelago.
When included in a broader itinerary, Santo Stefano represents an interesting stop that combines sea, landscapes and historical context.
When is the best time to visit Santo Stefano Island?
The best time to visit Santo Stefano is from May to October, when sea conditions are generally favorable and allow easy navigation between the islands of the archipelago.
