Porto Istana
A long sandy beach facing Tavolara, where pale sand, shallow seabeds, and turquoise waters create one of the most iconic views on Sardinia’s north-eastern coast.
Discover Porto Istana
Porto Istana stretches along a wide section of coastline south of Olbia, in a privileged position directly facing the island of Tavolara. The beach is divided into several sandy inlets separated by small rocky headlands, creating a harmonious sequence of bright shorelines and more intimate stretches. The majestic presence of Tavolara on the horizon becomes the natural focal point of the landscape.
The sand is fine and light, while the sea slopes gently with shallow, regular seabeds, ideal for long and relaxed swims. The colors range from emerald green to bright turquoise, with water so clear that the seabed remains visible even several meters from shore on calm days. The eastern exposure makes Porto Istana particularly luminous, with reflections shifting throughout the day as the sun moves across the sky.
Seen from the sea, Porto Istana appears as a pale strip opening between Mediterranean vegetation and low rocks, with water maintaining an intense and uniform color. Arriving by dinghy allows you to choose the most sheltered section according to wind conditions, stopping in the calmest inlets while enjoying a privileged view of Tavolara and the surrounding gulf.
Including Porto Istana in a dinghy tour along the coast between Olbia and the Tavolara – Punta Coda Cavallo Marine Protected Area adds a bright and panoramic stop, where beauty lies in the balance between wide beach, crystal-clear sea, and the imposing island presence on the horizon.
What to expect in this paradise
Pale sand, shallow waters, and constant views of Tavolara: Porto Istana is one of the most scenic beaches near Olbia, ideal for a dinghy stop between turquoise sea and open horizons.

Fun Facts and Frequently Asked Questions
Where is Porto Istana located?
Porto Istana is located on the northeastern coast of Sardinia, south of Olbia, in a privileged position facing the island of Tavolara. It is one of the first large bays you encounter heading south from the city, characterized by a sequence of coves and beaches separated by small granite outcrops.
This area belongs to the Tavolara – Punta Coda Cavallo marine protected area, a natural environment of great scenic value where the sea takes on extremely clear and transparent shades. Porto Istana stands out for its openness toward the open sea and for its direct view of the imposing profile of Tavolara, which dominates the horizon.
During a day at sea with Flag Sardinia, Porto Istana represents one of the ideal first stops when departing from Marina di Sa Jaga – Molo Moro, especially for those using luxury RIB boats in bareboat rental or choosing a charter with skipper to explore the Olbia coastline.
How to reach Porto Istana?
Porto Istana is easily reachable by land thanks to its proximity to Olbia, from which it is about a 15-minute drive. The road leading to the beach passes through a residential area and ends with direct access points to the different coves that make up the bay.
Although accessible, during the summer months it can become crowded and parking areas fill up quickly, especially during the central hours of the day. For this reason, the best way to reach Porto Istana and fully experience it is by sea.
Sailing along the coastline, the bay gradually opens up, revealing its shallow waters and sandy seabeds. With Flag Sardinia’s luxury RIB boats, Porto Istana can be reached in just a few minutes, making it a perfect first stop at the beginning of the day.
In the case of a charter with skipper, it is possible to organize itineraries that include Porto Istana as the first stop, completely avoiding traffic and enjoying privileged access directly from the sea.
What is Porto Istana famous for?
Porto Istana is famous for the extraordinary color of its sea, characterized by very light turquoise shades that recall tropical scenery. The combination of sandy seabeds and crystal-clear water creates a unique visual effect, especially evident on sunny days with calm sea conditions.
Another distinctive element is the view of Tavolara, which from this perspective appears massive and very close, making the landscape highly recognizable. The constant presence of wind, especially the mistral, helps keep the water clear but can also make the area more dynamic in terms of sea conditions.
Porto Istana is also appreciated for the variety of its coves, each with slightly different characteristics, allowing visitors to choose the best spot depending on the conditions of the day.
During an excursion with Flag Sardinia, it is one of the most requested destinations precisely because of its immediate visual impact, ideal both for those in bareboat rental and for those choosing a charter with skipper.
What to do in Porto Istana?
At Porto Istana, the main activity is to experience the sea directly, taking advantage of the shallow and transparent waters that invite long stays in the water. It is a perfect area for swimming, relaxing and enjoying an open and bright natural setting.
The presence of sandy seabeds makes the area particularly suitable for longer stops by RIB boat, with the possibility of anchoring safely in different parts of the bay, depending on wind conditions.
Those using Flag Sardinia’s luxury RIB boats can choose Porto Istana as the first stop of the day, starting with a relaxing swim before continuing toward Tavolara or other more exposed destinations.
In the case of a charter with skipper, it is possible to stop in less crowded coves selected according to weather conditions, while in bareboat rental Porto Istana represents a simple and intuitive point to manage even for those less familiar with the area.
What is the best time to visit Porto Istana?
The best time to visit Porto Istana is from June to September, but the ideal conditions are mainly found in June and September, when the sea is more stable and the number of visitors is lower.
During July and August, Porto Istana becomes very busy, especially from land access, and this can affect the beach experience. However, arriving by sea with a RIB boat allows you to maintain a high level of comfort even during peak season.
Weather conditions play an important role, especially the mistral wind, which can make the sea rougher. On calmer days, Porto Istana expresses its full potential, with flat water and extremely intense colors.
With Flag Sardinia, it is possible to plan the visit by choosing the best time of day and the most favorable conditions, both in bareboat rental and in charter with skipper.
Why visit Porto Istana during a RIB tour?
Visiting Porto Istana during a RIB tour allows you to fully appreciate the characteristics of this bay, which from the sea appears much wider, more varied and more accessible than it does from land.
While navigating along the coast, it is possible to identify the different coves and choose the most suitable one depending on wind and crowd levels, avoiding the busiest areas and finding quieter spots to stop.
Moreover, Porto Istana is perfect as a first stop in an itinerary, as it allows you to start the day calmly in relatively sheltered waters before moving toward Tavolara or other more exposed areas.
With Flag Sardinia, Porto Istana becomes part of a tailor-made route. In bareboat rental it represents a simple and safe destination, while in charter with skipper it is integrated into a wider itinerary optimized according to sea conditions and guests’ preferences.
Experiencing it by RIB means accessing a more dynamic and authentic dimension, where every stop can be different and adapted in real time.

ECCELLENTE In base a 101 recensioni Pubblicato su Feline Heine21/06/2026Trustindex verifica che la fonte originale della recensione sia Google. One word, Amazing!!! First of all, we would like to thank Gabriele & Ludovico for the amazing communication and guidance, not only during the booking process but also during the day of rental. They were very transparent about costs, we had a great check in/check out process, and they respond very well and clear during our communication on mail. They were absolutely wonderful. We both have our nautical license so we were able to book the R6 without a skipper. This was no problem at all. We went to multiple (recommended) places in the area of Porto Rotondo and they were beautiful. Water so clear as you see on the pictures and we even saw dolphins, twice!! The service they provide is like no other and included drinks, snacks, towels, water-shoes you name it. It was an experience we will never forget! Will definitely go back here whenever we are in Sardinia.Pubblicato su Sabrina Mechta20/06/2026Trustindex verifica che la fonte originale della recensione sia Google.
