Cala Girgolu
A bright bay in the Punta Coda Cavallo area, where pale sand, sculpted granite rocks and turquoise waters create one of the most scenic stretches of coastline.
Discover Cala Girgolu
Cala Girgolu lies along the coast of Punta Coda Cavallo, in a stretch characterized by wide expanses of pale sand interspersed with granite outcrops shaped by wind and sea. It is one of the most recognizable bays in the area, thanks to the presence of uniquely shaped rocks emerging from the water and creating ever-changing views depending on the angle of observation.
The main beach is wide and bright, with sandy seabeds that slope gently and remain shallow for several meters from the shore. The water is exceptionally clear and displays shades ranging from very light green to vivid turquoise, with light reflections enhancing the transparency and highlighting the patches of sand and rock on the seabed.
Around the bay, Mediterranean scrub grows thick and fragrant, with juniper bushes and low shrubs overlooking the sea, preserving the natural and relatively unspoiled character of the area. From offshore, Cala Girgolu appears as a sequence of small inlets alternating between sand and rock, forming a varied and visually engaging landscape for those navigating along this coastline.
During a boat excursion in the Punta Coda Cavallo area, Cala Girgolu can be an ideal stop for swimming in shallow and calm waters, as well as a panoramic point from which to admire the silhouettes of the islands on the horizon. The combination of pale seabeds, granite rocks and crystal-clear sea makes it one of the most scenic and versatile stops in the region.
What to expect in this paradise
Shallow, crystal-clear seabeds, wind-shaped granite rocks and waters in countless shades: Cala Girgolu is a striking stop during a boat tour among the bays of Punta Coda Cavallo.

Where is Cala Girgolu located?
Cala Girgolu is located along the north-eastern coast of Sardinia, in the area of Vaccileddi, at the foot of Monte Petrosu, in a coastal stretch between Loiri Porto San Paolo and San Teodoro. This area is part of the wider landscape facing Tavolara and Molara and is closely connected to the Tavolara – Punta Coda Cavallo Marine Protected Area.
From a landscape perspective, Cala Girgolu is one of the most distinctive coves in Gallura thanks to its combination of light sand, sculpted granite rocks and Mediterranean vegetation. The setting is very different from the long, open beaches of the area, as here the coastline itself plays a central role in shaping the experience.
How to reach Cala Girgolu?
Cala Girgolu can be reached by car by following the road towards Monte Petrosu and Vaccileddi, between San Teodoro and Loiri Porto San Paolo. Olbia is the main arrival hub for visitors travelling to this part of Sardinia, while San Teodoro and Porto San Paolo are the most convenient reference points for planning a beach day.
The cove can also be accessed by sea, which is one of the best ways to fully appreciate its shape and surroundings. Navigating along the coastline reveals small inlets, granite formations and the alternation between sandy and rocky sections that define this stretch of coast.
With Flag Sardinia, you can explore the area aboard luxury rib boats: if you hold a boating licence, you can choose a bareboat rental and plan your day independently, while those who prefer a more relaxed experience can opt for a skipper service.
What is Cala Girgolu known for?
Cala Girgolu is best known for the famous Turtle Rock, a granite formation shaped by erosion that has become one of the most photographed natural landmarks in the entire Gallura region. This iconic feature makes the cove immediately recognisable and sets it apart from many other beaches along the north-eastern coast of Sardinia.
Beyond the Turtle Rock, Cala Girgolu is appreciated for its overall landscape, which combines light sand, small smooth pebbles, shallow seabed, crystal-clear water and sculpted granite rocks. These elements create a unique and visually rich environment, offering a more varied and scenic experience compared to a typical beach.
What to do in Cala Girgolu?
At Cala Girgolu, you can enjoy a complete seaside experience that goes beyond simply swimming and sunbathing. The shallow seabed makes it suitable for relaxed swimming and for families, while the presence of beach services, small restaurants and equipment rentals makes it convenient for longer stays.
From a natural and scenic point of view, Cala Girgolu is particularly interesting for those who enjoy exploring coastal landscapes. Visitors can observe the unique shapes of the granite rocks, the contrast between Mediterranean vegetation and turquoise waters, and the open views towards Tavolara.
Many visitors also include Cala Girgolu in a wider itinerary, combining it with nearby destinations such as Cala Brandinchi, Lu Impostu, Punta Coda Cavallo and the coastline between San Teodoro and Loiri Porto San Paolo.

The best time to visit Cala Girgolu is from late spring to early autumn, when the climate along the north-eastern coast of Sardinia enhances the colours of the water and the overall beach experience. During the summer months, the conditions are ideal for swimming and spending the day by the sea, while spring and September are particularly suitable for those seeking a more peaceful atmosphere.
In the shoulder seasons, Cala Girgolu also becomes very interesting from a landscape perspective, as visitors can better appreciate the relationship between granite formations, Mediterranean vegetation and the sea. This period is ideal for those looking for a less crowded but still highly scenic experience.

The famous Turtle Rock also takes on a different visual impact when seen from the water.
A boat tour also makes it easy to connect Cala Girgolu with other key destinations in the same area, such as Lu Impostu, Cala Brandinchi, Punta Coda Cavallo and the waters around Tavolara and Molara, creating a much richer and more dynamic experience than visiting a single beach from land.

First of all, we would like to thank Gabriele & Ludovico for the amazing communication and guidance, not only during the booking process but also during the day of rental. They were very transparent about costs, we had a great check in/check out process, and they respond very well and clear during our communication on mail. They were absolutely wonderful. We both have our nautical license so we were able to book the R6 without a skipper. This was no problem at all. We went to multiple (recommended) places in the area of Porto Rotondo and they were beautiful. Water so clear as you see on the pictures and we even saw dolphins, twice!! The service they provide is like no other and included drinks, snacks, towels, water-shoes you name it. It was an experience we will never forget! Will definitely go back here whenever we are in Sardinia.Pubblicato su Sabrina Mechta20/06/2026Trustindex verifica che la fonte originale della recensione sia Google.
